Welcome to the #QuiltBlockMania Back to School blog hop!
A fabulous group of quilt pattern designers has joined forces to offer you FREE 12-inch quilt blocks, all with a Back to School theme for August 2020. After a long day of back to school shopping, and reassuring kids that they can handle online learning in the year of Covid, you deserve a play date with your sewing machine. Choose one or all of the 38 blocks that feature a variety of quilting techniques, from traditional piecing to applique and foundation paper piecing.
Back to School
Which school supplies are your favorite? I love shopping for notebooks and writing instruments, so my block is the good old-fashioned Number 2 Pencil. Make a whole quilt with a rainbow of colored pencils, or add some books and a schoolhouse block for a sampler.
Download the block instructions now… free during the Back to School blog hop in August 2020.
Tips when sewing
First, print and sew the pencil top and eraser units using the paper piecing method. My FPP tutorials are here.
Next, piece the body of the pencil.
Sew the block together in rows. Be careful when piecing diagonals…they do not align before sewing.
For perfect placement, allow the diagonal seams to overlap.
Once the block is assembled, it will look great in a Back to School Sampler, with the other 12-inch blocks from these fabulous designers:

I can’t wait to see what you make! Please email me a photo of your completed block. Remember to use the hashtag #quiltblockmania when you share on social media. Quilters love show and tell.
Of course, we need a pencil! Reminds me of that line in You’ve Got Mail about sending a bouquet of yellow pencils in the fall.
That would be a delightful gift, LOL.
This block is fabulous! I love how you broke down the block into pieces – masterful!
Thanks! I know some people aren’t fans of paper piecing…hopefully this little taste of it will change their minds!
