Celebrate Winter with #QuiltBlockMania

I love to celebrate winter with the fabulous designers of Quilt Block Mania, because it takes my mind off the insanely hot temperatures we are having in Arizona. Sewing with snowy fabrics has me dreaming of holidays in the mountains. I would be very happy bundled up under a pile of quilts, sipping hot chocolate, and surrounded by family.

Inspired to Celebrate Winter

When I escape the Valley of the Sun, I head to the cool pines on the Mogollon Rim. The forest inspired my Evergreen block for Winter Celebrations edition of #QuiltBlockMania. Download the piecing instructions HERE, then visit the remaining designers, linked below, and gather their complimentary blocks as well.

Putting the Evergreen Block together

To piece the Evergreen block, start by sewing the tree fabric to the background. I was originally going to use a scrappy background, but then I remembered I had a light colored fabric with snowflakes! Perfect choice to celebrate winter.

To get a diagonal seam for the tree branch, position the fabrics as an L. Do not sew into the corner, but across the diagonal. (Watch a video that describes this process.)

Drawing a line from corner to corner will help you sew the diagonal seam for the tree branches.

Cut all three rows at the same time to build the Evergreen tree.

Sew a square of tree trunk fabric to a background strip, and trim it to the same size as the other rows.

Finishing the Evergreen Block

Finish the block by sewing the rows together.

I think this block would be fun to embellish with buttons, yarn couching, or some embroidery. Please share your version with the hashtags #TBQevergreenblock and #quiltblockmania. I can’t wait to see your quilts that celebrate Winter!
