April 1st means it is time for the Monthly Color Challenge. This month, we are making cherry red quilt blocks. Find the detailed instructions from our fabulous hostess, Patterns by Jen.
No Fooling, that’s really RED!
Jen chose cherry red as the color for April. No problem finding that in my stash! I make alot of quilts with a patriotic color scheme, so I have plenty of red on hand. For the 12-inch block, I chose two strips from my Island Batik Stashbuster packs. To double-check the contrast between the two shades of red, I used the monochrome filter on my phone camera. This is a great way to test your quilt color palette!
The April cherry red quilt blocks are a fun study in stripes.
With so many seams and narrow fabric strips, you will get better results by using a stiletto to guide the fabric under the presser foot. I always keep the Purple Thang next to my sewing machine!

Mini blocks are so cute!
As I have been doing every month, I made two of the 6-inch blocks as well. This is a stashbusting effort, after all! You can see my blocks from January, February, and March by clicking on each month. Because the light and dark fabrics are used equally this month, I decided to use black and white fabric to make two different versions of the smaller blocks. I really enjoyed this pattern!
Treat yourself to a Cherry dessert
We are pairing our quilt blocks with recipes each month. Of course, cherry pie is a classic – just thinking of flaky pie crust and ice cream melting over those tart cherries has me drooling! But, I am thinking about the first time I had Cherries Jubilee. It is so fun to see flames at the table! I felt so grown up, eating such a decadent dessert. I haven’t been brave enough to try this dish at home, although I could expand my culinary efforts with this recipe.
