Welcome to the November edition of the 2022 Monthly Color Challenge. This month features cloves and quilt blocks, using brown fabrics. I got to play with some of my oldest scraps!

Cloves
Our spicy inspiration this month is the aromatic clove. Can you smell it? Cloves are often added to rubs and marinades. Thinking of wonderful fragrances coming from the kitchen has me excited for holiday cooking.
Brown Fabric
My selection of browns is somewhat limited, because a little seems to go a long way in a quilt. I mixed some stripes with batiks for the November blocks.
I chose one print with each of the batiks so each block features a light and dark brown.
The pieces for this block include triangles for the square-in-a-square center, and additional strips to make the striped corners.
Here is the result – one large 12-inch block, and two small 6-inch blocks. You can get the pattern from Patterns by Jen.

Have you made a brown quilt? I used terra cotta, which is a reddish brown, as my color inspiration for this quilt:
It’s called Terra Cotta Village and you can find the pattern in the book Monochromatic Quilts: Amazing Variety.
Last year, I got some gorgeous fabric from Island Batik that I turned into a set of placemats. You can find them here: Fresh Start placemat pattern.
Brown can be a masculine color scheme, so mix in some greens for the special man in your life. When you mix brown with pastels, you can make some cute baby quilts for any gender. I’d love to see your favorite brown fabrics!
