Welcome to the Island Batik Lone Star Blog Hop! There have been some incredible examples of this classic quilt design and such great new fabric collections to play with.
Lone Star Quilts
The Lone Star design is traditionally composed of diamond patches forming an 8-point star. Each row of diamonds is usually a different color so you will see delightfully scrappy quilts as the colors radiate outwards.
Quilting Icon Eleanor Burns shares her version in this pattern, available from Amazon with my affiliate link:
I’d love to travel to South Dakota and see the Dignity statue that features a Lone Star quilt…

To plan my own lone star, I focused on the diamond elements and turned my attention to Judy Neimeyer’s paper pieced designs. Many of these patterns have a lone star at the center. My final selection was Andromeda.
Piecing Process
If you have any experience with Judy Niemeyer patterns, you know it takes alot of organization! Island Batik sent me the Heartland Collection, so I spent some time planning my fabric choices for each section. Sticky notes came in very handy to keep track of my decisions.
Then, I began paper piecing. This stage lasted for several weeks!
In the end, it was worth it. The Lone Star motif is layered behind the arcs giving this quilt a great sense of movement. There are additional diamonds in the framed border around the star, and some smaller stars nestled in between each section.
Quilt Reveal
The final step in bringing my lone star quilt to life was the free motion quilting.
With such a striking pattern and bold fabrics, I knew many of the stitches would not be seen. I kept my designs simple so the quilting doesn’t fight with the fabric.
Including some solid fabric on the back gives you a peek at these motifs.
The Island Batik Ambassador Team
In addition to the beautiful Heartland fabric from Island Batik, I used Schmetz needles and Hobbs Batting in my December project. Thanks to these industry partners who have supported the 2022 Ambassador challenges.
It has been a thrill to see the fabulous quilts produced each month by these talented quilters. Be sure to visit them in December to see their amazing Lone Star designs!
