The March Color Challenge, hosted by Patterns by Jen, starts with an important question. Are yams and sweet potatoes the same thing??? Actually no, they are different vegetables. Since the March color challenge has us sewing red-orange pinwheels, I think we are closer to the shade of a sweet potato!
Red-Orange Pinwheels in March
In either case, let’s get to the fun stuff. The pattern for March is a modern pinwheel design. Orange is the smallest section of my stash, so my fabric choices were a bit limited. I used some bold (blinding?) prints for the 12″ block.
I love the deconstructed feel created by the split triangles. This block shows how color placement really changes things. Did you realize it is the same as the twin star?
The six inch blocks have a calmer feel. I love changing the placement of dark and light fabrics to see how it affects the block design. Which version do you prefer?
If you want to stick to traditional pinwheels made from half-square triangles, find my tips in this blog post.
Red-orange recipes
Sweet potatoes are a fun way to add more color to the dinner plate. There are too many nights where we have a beige menu and I’d like to incorporate more vegan options in our meal plan. This sweet potato and black bean casserole sounds yummy! What is your favorite way to prepare sweet potatoes or yams?
