June 1 … whether you are sprinting into summer or waiting for winter, a splash of mustard yellow in your quilting brings a bit of cheer to your day. The June block for the 2022 Spicy Monthly Color Challenge encourages us to play with the bright shades of mustard yellow. Find all instructions from Patterns by Jen with this link.

Mustard Yellow Fabrics
Diving into my stash to search for the perfect pairing is my favorite part of the process (until I get to the next phase, LOL). I pulled out the yellow bin and found the bright shades for the larger block. You can choose to make either 12″ or 6″ blocks. I am trying to use up my stash, so I make both sizes. Unfortunately, I always seem to have more scraps!
Here are the bright shades I found for the large block. I love to pair a print with a fabric that reads as a solid.
Then I chose a few more small pieces for the six inch blocks. Since it takes more small blocks to make a decent size quilt, I like to make two blocks each month and reverse the placement of light and dark fabrics.
(Side note…this is why you can’t trust colors on a computer. Same camera, different days and it shows the same cutting mat first as green, then as blue! Crazy!)
Square in a Square, sort of
The June blocks are a variation of square-in-a-square. I found the construction of corner triangles and flying geese to be an easy chain-piecing exercise.
Unfortunate mishap! One of my points did not line up on the large block.
Am I disappointed? Yes.
Will I re-do it? Not this time!
Mistakes like that can be minimized with quilting and they are easily over-looked by non-quilters.
Mustard – Yellow or Spicy?
I think of hot dogs and potato salad as the perfect spots for a bit of mustard. Yellow mustard is the only garnish my husband needs on his hot dogs, but we both go for spicy mustard on grilled sausage. What is your preference?
Yellow Suns Quilt
Making an entirely yellow quilt is certainly eye-catching. The Yellow Suns pattern from the book Monochromatic Quilts: Amazing Variety is a bestseller!
And I have always loved the Pennant design from Kaffe Fassett’s book “Glorious Patchwork.” Here is a version I found online:

I agree that perfect points need not always be a priority! That being said, I’m so confused by this block pattern. The exact same block could be made with 4 HSTs and a little snowball corner on each one. Fewer seams, fewer points to match, same (or better) result! ♀️
There are always different approaches to most quilt designs. I am following the designer’s construction. Each quilter is free to analysze the block and come up with their own interpretation. I love to see the variety and beautiful diversity of the quilting world!
