New Year, New Project – Planning for 2020

Even with a pile of unfinished quilts, the allure of something new is hard to resist. And with the turning of the calendar comes the desire to start a new project for the new year. Take a look at what I have planned for 2020.

I always drool over Elizabeth Hartman’s quilts.  I’ve had the pleasure of quilting her Fancy Forest pattern.

quilting animalsI bought some of her patterns as an early Christmas present to myself. A new project for the new year will be the Spectacular Savannah. Or should I start with the gnomes?!?

Choosing fabric

I love the traditional colors of the original pattern, but I have the crazy idea to use some wild colors for the animals. Bold jewel tones will create eye-popping results. I can shop my stash for most of the required fabric, since another project for the new year is also to clean up and clear out. The best way to get rid of fabric is to put it in a quilt!

I will balance the riot of color with a consistent background, maybe a light grey or tan. My first thought is to use a pale green, but the leafy border will probably stand out best on tan. Stay tuned for progress pictures as I choose fabric for the new project for the new year!

Paper Plates and Sticky notes

Last year, I made the Delightful Desert quilt.Elizabeth Hartman pattern

I quickly learned that organization is key to success with these patterns. The instructions are extremely detailed, using both words and diagrams. I only cut the fabric for the block I am working on, which may have 30 or more pieces. Sticky notes are important to label the pieces as I cut. I keep them on paper plates as I move from cutting table to the sewing machine, which minimizes the chance that something will get lost.

 Deadlines

When I am making something for myself, there is generally no deadline. That feeds the problem of a huge pile of UFOs –  projects come up that do have deadlines and I never get back to the first thing I started. To hold myself accountable, let’s have a quilt along! You don’t have to make Spectacular Savannah with me, choose any Elizabeth Hartman pattern. We will start on January 1, 2020 and I will share my progress in our Facebook group.

Have you planned a new project for the new year? I can’t wait to hear about it!
