There is so much to celebrate in October! The arrival of cooler temperatures, the start of the holiday season, my birthday….and of course a new Monthly Color Challenge block. I think the Pink Pinwheels block from Patterns by Jen looks like a banner of hanging flags, perfect for all the fall celbrations.
October’s Pink Pinwheels
I love every step of the quilting process, but nothing compares to the burst of creative energy that comes from selecting fabrics for a new project. Funny how many polka dots fabrics I found in my stash!
The first step in this “double” pinwheel block is to stitch half-square triangles. These are my favorite quilt block component, and the perfect opportunity to chain piece. I trimmed all the units with my Bloc-Loc ruler.
You’ve never tried the Bloc-Loc?!? Then you need to watch this video to see it in action!
After creating the center pink pinwheels, add more HSTs in the corners, and piece the block as a nine-patch.
I reversed the placement of light and dark fabric to make two of the six inch blocks.
Pink Pinwheels = Grapefruit
Doesn’t this quilt block remind you of a half grapefuit? I remember being surprised at a restaurant once, where they served a grapefruit-and-spinach salad, because I had only ever eaten grapefruit at breakfast. It was kind of a chore to cut along each section in order to have a spoonful, but I loved the tangy taste.

No fancy recipes to share this month, just wondering who else would rather drink grapefruit juice than orange juice?

Those are awesome! I do like pink grapefruit and when I get tired of OJ, I buy Ruby Red grapefruit juice for a while.
Thanks! I miss my parent’s grapefruit tree. Such a yummy breakfast treat.
Those little 6-inch blocks are really cute! I like an occasional pink grapefruit – more than regular grapefruit! LOL
Plain yellow grapefruit is not what comes to mind! I prefer pink too, LOL.
