July, those happy days of fireworks, pool parties, and summer vacations. I took the patriotic theme of this month and designed a simple Bullseye block for the July edition of the Little Bit Different Block of the Month program. Similar to the classic Courthouse Steps quilt block, we are adding pieces around a center rectangle.

Bullseye Construction
The center piece starts at 2 1/2″ wide, then I used 1 1/2″ strips for the rings, so the block finishes at our Little Bit Different Size of 6 1/2″ x 9 1/2″.
You can create pretty ripples of color when you alternate the placement of the center piece and the outer ring. Take a look at my first two blocks:

Loyalty Quilt
Once your blocks are ready, you can combine them with plain rectangles to make the Loyalty Quilt. This will be a fun scrappy project to work on in July! Leave a comment if you will be sewing along with me.

You can make this quilt bigger by adding more blocks, either the pieced Bullseye blocks or plain rectangles to continue the rings of color. The pattern includes instructions for lap, twin and queen size quilts. I can’t wait to see your version!

With software like EQ8, which I described in this blog post, I can quickly change the coloring of the Bullseye block and it becomes a log cabin!
You can learn more about EQ8 from this demo video on Youtube.

Another few clicks on the computer and the log cabin become a Courthouse Steps block:

With careful color selection, you can make a fun quilt where the blocks look like lanterns –

With so many ideas floating in my head, I’d better get off the computer and spend more time at the sewing machine! Luckily, I have an Accuquilt GO to help with the cutting, and the 1 1/2″ strip die will be getting a workout soon.
Happy Quilting!

This block/quilt might be a great scrap buster.
