What happens when a pinwheel block is deconstructed to a basic four-patch? You end up with a wonderful modern quilt design! Include an ombre background and you have a dynamic design that reminds me of a shooting star. Just as a real meteor loses its mass as it falls to Earth, the most complicated blocks in the Meteor quilt are reduced to the bare minimum.
Meteor – Modern Quilt Design
Modern quilts typically have negative space, and the Meteor Quilt gives you plenty of room for free motion quilting designs. Different blocks are arranged in diagonal rows on an alternate grid, adding to the modern feel of the pattern. Solid squares appear in the center, giving your eye a place to rest as the quilt blocks move from intricate piecing to simplified elements.
Meteor is an AnglePlay pattern
There are several options for making half-rectangle triangles. You can draw the finished rectangle with the diangonal marked for foundaiton paper piecing or try piecing them similar to Two-At-A-Time Half Square Triangles. But, I have found that the easiest, most accurate method is to use AnglePlay(R) templates. Watch a demo:
The Meteor quilt uses the ‘A’ and ‘H’ templates, which are included in the Full Set of AnglePlay templates. Available here.

During the Meteor Quilt Along, I will be sewing a smaller quilt with 20 blocks, instead of the original size which has 30 blocks. The wonderful thing about quilting is there are many options to make a quilt that fits in whatever space you have. Need help adjusting? We will talk about different possibilities during the quilt along.
I drafted an alternate color way and purchased a range of bue and green fabrics for my next version. What colors do you see for this pattern?
