Savannah Collection Starburst Pillow

Savannah Blog Hop cover imageOh, the joy of new fabric! I was thrilled to get a preview of the Savannah collection by Tamarinis for Island Batik. This is a great range of light to dark fabrics that includes my favorite shades of teal mixed with yellows and purples.

Savannah Starburst

I’ve been itching to make another sample of my Teal Universe pattern and the Savannah collection is perfect. I concentrated on the center starburst morif and made a throw pillow.

Here are the prints I chose as my light, medium and dark colors.

The pixelated design of the Teal Universe pattern comes together easily with 2-1/2″ strips. I used my AccuQuilt GO! cutter to get started. (If you purchase from my affiliate link, I earn a small commission. Read my full Disclosure policy here.)

Once I had my pieces sorted by size, I followed the pattern diagram to piece each section.

There are very few seams to match so this was a fun project to work on during one of my YouTube Live broadcasts. You can catch the replay here.

The center starburst finishes at 28 inches square, which is not a standard pillow size.  I did a quick online search and found a pillow form at my local craft store.

But, I did not want to drive anywhere, so I made my own pillow insert from scraps of batting and the remaining fiber fill from my recent soft toy project. You can read about the adventure of toy-making in this blog post.

Ta-da! The Savannah Starburst coordinates beautifully with my blue couch. And it is kitty-tested and approved!

A Universe of Color

While I enjoy working with a monochromatic color palette, my mind always wanders to alternate colorways. With my EQ8 design software, it is easy to audition these variations.

Here is the full Teal Universe pattern with my Savannah Starburst colors.

Another option is a dark background with bright accents.

And a third choice is a lighter background and the full rainbow of colors, with each element of the quilt in a different fabric.

  1. I really like your pillow design. The one you made is my favorite, but it would be fun to make all three and use them together. Your kitty did a beautiful pose for the photo. Oh kitty! Have a great day!

  2. I love these fabric. They are so rich and luscious and I think the teal Universe design is my favourite of the three. Thanks for sharing
