Slider – a HRT split 9-patch

Hello October! It’s time for Slider, a HRT split nine patch – the next installment in the Little Bit Different 2023 block of the month sampler. Let’s practice our half-rectangle triangles and make Split Nine-Patch blocks.

Slider is a fun, scrappy block, made from an assortment of lights and darks. You could stick to a monochromatic look, or add some novelty prints for an I-spy game. As you can see from my sample block pictured above, I have lots of polka dots in my stash!

HRT tips

Some of our previous blocks in the BOM use HRTs. I hope you are enjoying this element of the blocks. Make the sewing easy with the Little Bit Different ruler – it has special guidelines for the HRT units we need for the Slider block!

Some things to keep in mind as you work with HRTs:

  • Keep fabric right-side up as you cut.
  • Look for two mountain peaks as you sew.
  • Press seams open to reduce bulk.
  • Plan ahead and verify the number of uphill and downhill units in the block layout.

Remember, our rectangular blocks don’t rotate easily. If you want to put several blocks togerther to make diamonds, then you need to make both uphill and downhill HRTs.

Quilt Layout

Speaking of diamonds, that is the primary element of the October quilt which was designed to feature the Slider block. The lap and twin size of this pattern feature a single large diamond across the quilt, while the queen size interlocks two diamonds. Grab the Diamond pattern while it is on sale this month! Or make it even easier and sign up for my email list to get notified when new patterns are available.

You could make the Diamond quilt even easier by creating a single large HRT in place of the scrappy Slider blocks. Let me know in the comments if you prefer that option!
